Tonight's Shamokin meeting is 6 p.m., not 7
SHAMOKIN - Tonight's budget meeting for city council will be held at 6 p.m., not 7 as reported in today's News-Item.
It was advertised to be held at city hall, and that is unlikely to change at this point despite the expectation of a large crowd of people for the relatively small, second-floor council chambers.
City council members have balanced the 2014 budget with a plan to cut six members of the 13-man police force. Four officers with the least seniority, along with the department's two special officers, would be fuloughed if the budget plan become reality, Chief Ed Griffiths said Friday.
Council members have met a number of times over the past month to find ways to eliminate a deficit for 2014 that started at about $616,000.
