Start of city paving in downtown Shamokin set for Thursday
SHAMOKIN — Due to the predicted heavy rain over the next few days, PPL Electric Utilities has rescheduled paving work downtown for Thursday during the day, the company announced Monday.
About 40 percent of the paving work will be done on Independence Street, between Orange and Shamokin streets that day, weather permitting. PPL Electric Utilities will have traffic controls in place.
The remainder of the work, between Orange and Market streets, will be done after Memorial Day to allow UGI to complete scheduled work along that section of Independence Street.
The paving work is the last major part of PPL’s street light project. The 44 new reliable and efficient street lights have already been energized in downtown Shamokin. PPL Electric Utilities will continue to own and maintain the lighting system. There will be no cost to the city for the project.
