YOUTH BASEBALL: Black Diamond Blacks 6-1 in tournament
ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Black Diamond Blacks, an all-star team playing in a 32-team tournament near Cooperstown, and have posted a 6-1 record so far against teams from around the country.
In their first game, the Black Diamonds beat the California Vipers, 10-6. Bear Wagner went 3-for-3 with three home runs, Nick Shedleski homered, Tommy Reisinger had two singles and John Ayres was the winning pitcher.
The Black Diamonds then beat the New Hampshire Strathan Longhorns, 9-1. Noah Berkoski hit a home run, and Ayres, Jack Chapman, Wagner, Kaleb Sophy and Logan Wills all hit safely and Shedleski was the winning pitcher.
In game three, the Black Diamonds defeated the Illinois Lake Co. Lightning, 19-2. Ayres and Gaige Garcia had three hits each, Chapman and Anthony Sneavage hit home runs, and Logan Wills had two hits. Sophy was the winning pitcher.
The Black Diamonds beat the California Flames 5-3 in their next game. Berkoski hit a three-run homer, Chapman had a two-run homer and Sophy was the winning pitcher.
In their next game, the Black Diamonds defeated the Colorado Rocky Mountain Drillers 12-8. Wills hit a grand slam home run, Chapman homered and Ayres had two hits. Shedleski also homered and Reisinger was the winning pitcher.
The Black Diamonds then lost to the New York Renegades, 19-7. Shedleski hit a home run and Ayres went 3-for-3.
The Black Diamongs bounced back with an 11-1 win over the Schaumburg Flyers Orange from Illinois, hitting six home runs. Chapman hit two home runs, and Shedleski, Sophy, Sneavage and Ayres all hit home runs. Sophy was 3-for-3, Chapman 2-for-3 and Sneavage 2-for-2 and Ayres pitched a no-hitter with nine strikeouts.
