MOUNT CARMEL - Mount Carmel Area eighth-grade student Evan Salamone recently qualified for the National Mini Masters Golf Tournament for students ages 10 to 16.

Salamone started off his golf journey by winning a district tournament in Selinsgrove, a regional tournament in Harrisburg, and finally by taking home the state title competing against 35 other golfers in Lancaster. The top two place finishers from each state qualify for the National Mini Masters tournament which takes place April 25-28 in Winchester, Va.

Two students from each state will compete for the first two days after which 50 golfers will then be cut. Salamone loves golf and plays with a handicap of seven. His home golf course is Indian Hills, Paxinos, and his favorite golfer is Rickie Fowler.

This is Evan's second time competing in the Mini Masters tournament. Last year at age 13, he placed third in the nation.

Evan is the son of Ernie Salamone, Shamokin, and Roxanne Yurkiewch, Kulpmont. He is an honor student and a previous Elks award winner. In addition to golf, Evan plays Teener League baseball and plays for a travel basketball team.
