MILTON - Line Mountain wrestling coach Mike Martz said after his team's first round win in the District 4 Class AA Duals the other night that the Eagles had the potential to reach the state tournament, but only if everything broke their way.

Not much did Saturday morning against second-seeded Wyalusing.

Line Mountain won just five bouts, gave up four pins and lost some bouts Martz figured they had a shot at, and all that added up to a 42-21 loss to the Rams.

"We just ran out of bullets," said Martz, whose Eagles dropped to 9-4. "We gambled a little bit at some weights and it didn't pay off.

"We had some guys giving up some weight to try to get better matchups, and it didn't work. We didn't wrestle as well as I'd have liked, but I'm not sure it would have been enough. Wyalusing is very good. We needed some wins that we didn't get."

Wyalusing (20-1) is so good, in fact, that the Rams went on to win the title, beating Mifflinburg (15-3) in the semifinals, 42-27, and handing previously unbeaten Central Columbia (23-1) its first loss in the final, 30-25.

Martz said he thought the Eagles had reasonable shots at 120, 195 and 220, but all three went to the Rams. Freshman Justin Haley (12-14) scored a 5-2 win over Mark Harner at 120, Justin Griffith (11-5) took a 2-0 overtime win over Erik Smeltz (15-8) at 195 and freshman Dylan Otis (25-4) downed Kenny Rothermel (23-11) 5-0.

"We all thought all of those were winnable matches," Martz said. "Kenny was giving up a lot of weight (he weighed in at 188.4 to Otis' 217.8) and the other guy was just too strong."

Wylausing opened the match with a forfeit win at 138 but Adam Kritzer (30-5) took a tough 7-2 win over Joe Champluvier (18-7) at 145 to get the Eagles on the board. Britton Heim dropped a 7-1 decision to Taylor Fenton at 152, but Cody Rebuck (26-11) eaerned an 8-3 win over Tyler Thompson at 160 to keep Line Mountain close.

The Rams then won five bouts in a row, including another forfeit at 182, including pins by Dan Frankenfield (24-5) at 170, and Clayton Force (24-4) at 285.

Cameron Newman's pin at 106 gave Line Mountain a last gasp, but Wyalusinbg's Brandon Kelley (23-4) pinned Ethan Marquette-Hulsizer at 113 to effectively clinch the match.

Line Mountain got nice wins at the end from two of its aces. Mason Zimmerman (26-10) pinned Ryan Force at 126 and Seth Lansberry (32-2) took a defensive 1-0 win over Ryan Hart (23-4) at 132.

The loss will give the Eagles some extra time to prepare for the individual postseason tournaments, Martz said.

"We're looking forward to the individual postseason," he said. "I think our team is more geared to that. As a dual meet team, I think we probably maximized what we can do this season."
