TEENER BASEBALL: Long's opens championship series with victory
COAL TOWNSHIP - For a guy whose team just won by 10 runs, Long's Embroidery's Brad Haupt wasn't the happiest fellow after his team's 18-8 win over Kulpmont in Game 1 of the Lower Anthracite Teener League championship series.
Long's scored 13 runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 10-run lead but never really put Kulpmont away, at least as far as Haupt was concerned. He spent
five minutes after the game chastising his team for their lack of killer instinct.
"We had a real good first two innings, then we just kind of let up," Haupt said. "It's hard to keep your concentration and your attitude when you get up big like that early, and it's frustrating. They (Kulpmont) have some good kids and they were still battling and playing a competitive game right to the end."
Kulpmont took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on singles by Brian Dietz and Jesse Elliott, and a triple by Chris Reigle. But Long's sent 17 batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning. Kulpmont starting pitcher Matt Avellino did not retire a batter and overall, Long's had six hits, five walks and mixed in two passed balls, a wild pitch and three Kulpmont errors. Brad Carpenter, who was 3-for-4 and drove in four runs, had the big hit of the inning with a triple, and later also singled in the frame.
But after that, Long's kind of went into cruise control, according to Haupt. By the time the game was over, Long's committed six errors, and all but two of Kulpmont's eight runs were unearned.
"We kind of relaxed too much," Haupt said.
Long's pitcher Jacob Wolfe worked the first 3.2 innings and got the win. He gave up six hits and seven runs, but only two earned, struck out four and walked three.
Carpenter relieved him in the fourth.
Long's finally ended the game on the 10-run rule in the fifth when Cameron Fenix, who walked, scored on a fielder's choice by Jarred Rachau.
Fenix and R.J. Gurba, who was 2-for-2, each drove in two runs for Long's.
Elliott had two hits for Kulpmont.
The best-of-three series resumes tonight in Kulpmont at 5:30.
