TEENER BASEBALL: Long's clinches league championship
KULPMONT - Long's Embroidery, trailing by a run after five innings, ralled for six runs in the final two innings for an 8-4 comeback win over Kulpmont Wednesday to win the Lower Anthracite Teener Baseball League championship series, 2-0.
Long's only had three hits over the first five innings but strung five together in the final two innings and got help from five Kulpmont errors over the same stretch.
George Zalar had a run-scoring single and Cameron Fenix scored on a balk by Kulpmont pitcher Chris Reigle in the sixth inning, and Zalar later scored on a single by Jarred Rachau.
Brad Carpenter had a run-scoring double, and Colin Hoover a two-run single for insurance runs in the seventh.
"We didn't hit the ball a lot, but we had some clutch hits tonight," said Long's Coach Brad Haupt. "Last night (Tuesday) we had a great start and didn't finish so well, and tonight we didn't start so hot but finished strong."
"They really battled after that inning," Haupt said. "You've got to give it to them."
Haupt referred to Long's 13-3 first inning on Tuesday. Between then and the sixth inning last night, Kulpmont outscored Long's 8-7.
Brady Haupt pitched a complete game for the win, keeping Kulpmont bottled up for the most part. He gave up six hits, struck out seven and walked two.
Reigle worked the first six innings for Kulpmont in taking the loss.
Kulpmont took a 3-2 lead in the fifth on back-to-back doubles by the nine and 10 hitters, Gavin Sobol and Colin Herb, but Herb was thrown out at home later, helping Long's get out of the inning.
"We wanted to give the guys a hand (after Tuesday's bad first inning)," Kulpmont Coach Brian Dietz said. "We wanted to get kids on base and use our speed. That's what we've been doing all year. I'm proud of how the kids played."
Devin Pietkiewicz and Hoover each had two hits for Long's. Pietkiewicz and Carpenter each scored two runs.
Victor Swaboski, batting seventh for Kulpmont, was a thorn in Long's side, reaching base three times on a pair of singles and an error, and he drove in a run with his single in the sixth.
"This is really good for the kids," Brad Haupt said. "They played hard and worked hard all season. We went 16-3 and they deserve it."
