COAL TOWNSHIP - Starting the final five games of the 2009 season at quarterback for Shamokin Area was a learning experience that senior Leon Supsic wants to use as a springboard into 2010.

Supsic, firmly entrenched as the Indians' starter this year, is at the helm as the team adjusts to a new Wing-T offensive scheme and looks to improve upon its 3-7 record of a year ago.

"We are now a Wing-T team," head coach Dan Foor said. "And, really, it's gone pretty well.

"We began implementing things back in February and the kids have picked up on it."

At the center of all that happens on offense will be Supsic, who, so far, is comfortable in the new scheme.

"It was a little different at first," Supsic said. "But we're rolling now. Everything is falling into place."

Foor said Supsic, who made his first start last season against eventual Class AAA state champion Selinsgrove, is definitely the man for the job.

"Lee (Supsic) started five games at quarterback for us last year," Foor said. "And the kids definitely look up to him.

"He's not a really vocal leader; he leads more by action. The kids respond to him, and he's really picked up this offense."

Supsic said that game against Selinsgrove last year, despite ending in a lopsided defeat, served to boost his confidence.

"Going out against Selinsgrove, I think we scored the first touchdown all year that was scored against their first defense," Supsic said. "That definitely gave me confidence that I could do the job."

This year, Supsic looks for things to improve overall for the Indians.

"As far as we want to take ourselves, that's how far we can go," Supsic said. "It's all up to the team."
