Mount Carmel Area Track and Field Camp
Track and field camp, run by the Mount Carmel Area track and field team and coaches, for children entering first through eighth grades will be August 5 to 8 from 9 to 11 a.m. each day at the Silver Bowl. Cost is $45 and includes a camp t-shirt. August 8 will be a mini track meet for the campers to show off their skills. Kulpmont Fire Department
3rd annual golf tournament, Saturday, Sept. 7, at Indian Hills Golf Club. Tournament is a 4-man scramble with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Cost is $65 per golfer and includes green and cart fees, longest drive and closest to the pin as well as door prizes and more. Southern Columbia Field Hockey Camp
For girls in first through seventh grades, Monday, Aug. 5 through Wednesday, Aug. 7 with a rain date of Thursday, Aug. 8 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. each day at the Southern Columbia field hockey field. For more information, call 672-2341.
Red Tornado Touchdown Club
Mandatory meeting, Thursday, Aug. 1, 6 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. Parents and player, including junior high, freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors, must attend.
Wayside Open Golf Scramble
The 25th annual Wayside Open Golf Scramble will be held Saturday, Aug. 10 at Indian Hills Golf Club. Double shotgun starts will be held at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Players may register on a first-come, first-paid basis for either shotgun. The tournament includes coffee, donuts, a gift, carts, guest fees, lunch, beer, prizes and a pig roast with live entertainment. The Wayside Open has dedicated all monies raised to the Wiest-Wehry Scholarship fund awarded to students in the Line Mountain, Tri-Valley, Mount Carmel, Shikellamy and Southern Columbia school districts. Hole sponsors are being accepted and more information can be obtained by e-mailing Don Spieller at email@example.com. Cost is $80 until Aug. 1 and after Aug. 3 it will be $85. Only paid applications will be accepted.
The Schuylkill Coalcrackers will be hosting the Coalcracker Slugfest travel baseball tournament Aug. 17-18 in Minersville. Age brackets are U-9, and U-11. Entry fee is $275 per team. For more information, contact Keith at (570) 640-8086 or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Maine Fire Co. Golf Tournament
Two-man scramble, Aug. 3, at Indian Hills Golf Course. Registration is 9 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. Entrance fee is $60 per person and includes greens fees, cart, hot dog and beer at the course. There will also be food, beer and prizes at the Maine Fire Company following the tournament. To pre-register, call 648-1261.
Central Pa. Outlaws Tryouts
The Central Pa. Outlaws fastpitch tournament softball team will conduct tryouts for the 2014 U14 and U16 teams at the Line Mountain Community Field, located at 1001 Dairy Rd., Mandata, July 31 at 6 p.m. and Aug. 11 at 4:30 p.m. The team practices in Mount Carmel, Elysburg and Mandata. Annual meeting will be held Tuesday, Aug. 6, at 6:30 p.m. at Dr. Miller's office, 265 w. Spruce St., Shamokin. The meeting is open to the public.
Red Tornado Open
The Red Tornado Touchdown Club will hold its annual golf tournament Saturday, Aug. 10, at Mountain Valley Golf Course, beginning at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. Contact Dave Kleman to register or make a donation. All proceeds benefit the Red Tornado football program.

Hellbender 5K and Half Marathon
The 5th annual Hellbender 5K and Half Marathon road race will take place Sunday, Aug. 18, at the Weiser State Forest, Roaring Creek Tract. Registration is from 7-8:15 a.m. and the race starts at 8:30. The race is sponsored by the Roaring Creek Valley Conservation Association and the Susquehanna Ridge Runners Club. Proceeds will provide aid for projects to provide and promote clean water in the Roaring Creek watershed. Lourdes Regional Raiderfest 5K
Lourdes Regional's Raiderfest 5K Run will be held Saturday, Aug. 24 at 9 a.m. Race day registration starts at 8:00 at the Lourdes Regional parking lot. Medals will be awarded to the first overall male and female finishers and to the top three finishers, male and female, in nine different age groups. Pre-registered runners are guaranteed a T-shirt. Refreshments will be provided at the finish. Adult registration is $20, students (18 and younger) $15. Registration forms are available at the Lourdes main office or by e-mailing OLOL5K@yahoo.com.
MCA Concussion Testing
Mandatory concussion testing for all Mount Carmel Area athletes will take place at the high school on Tuesday, Aug. 6, and Thursday, Aug. 8, in rooms 212 and 216. Schedule is as follows: Tuesday, 3 p.m. - varsity football, cross country; 3:45 - varsity boys and girls soccer; 4:30 - conflicts. Thursday, 3 p.m. - junior high football; 3:45 - junior high girls basketball; 4:30 - conflicts.
Any player from the Shamokin Area School District interested in playing fall baseball should call Dr. Wayne Miller at 644-5050 during business hours. Teams will be composed of players 9-11 and 6-8 years old. There is no fee and the season will run from late August to late September. Persons willing to coach should also call to sign up.
The seventh annual Randy "Ziggy" Zigarski Horseshoe Tournament will be held Saturday, Aug. 17 at Nikomahs Campground off Mile Post Hill Road. Registration ends at noon with play beginning at 1 p.m. Cost is $10 per person and proceeds benefit a memorial scholarship in Zigarski's name at Mount Carmel Area. Both players from the top three teams will receive trophies and there will be concessions.
Mandatory coaches meeting, Friday, Aug. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus hall in Shamokin. All 2013 fall coaches and assistant coaches should attend to receive team rosters, equipment and practice schedule times. Anyone who is no longer coaching should also return equipment at this time.
Mount Carmel Charity Softball Tournament
Mount Carmel Township and Mount Carmel borough police, fire and EMS are participating in a one-day charity softball tournament Sunday, Aug. 4 at 9 a.m. The tournament will be at the Midway baseball near the Anthracite Little League baseball field. Proceeds will go to the Janet Weis Children's Hospital. Participating teams will come from Mount Carmel, Mount Carmel Township, Shamokin City Police, Pennsylvania State Police, Area Services Ambulance, Atlas Fire Company, Anthracite Fire Company, Clover Hose Company, American Hose Fire Company, Mount Carmel Rescue Squad and Natalie Fire Company. There will be receptacles to make donations.
Keystone Rules Interpretation
The Keystone Chapter of PIAA football officials mandatory rules interpretation meeting will be held Tuesday, Aug. 6, at 7 p.m. in room C-156 at Shamokin Area High School. Officials must attend other meetings during the season. Other meeting dates are Aug. 5, Aug. 13, Aug. 20, Aug. 27, Sept. 3, Sept. 17, Oct. 1, Oct. 15 and Oct. 29.
Shamokin Area Physicals
Shamokin Area Middle/High School sports fall physicals will be held Wednesday, July 31 at 2 p.m. Physical exams will be done by Dr. Wayne Miller at a cost of $20 (cash only, no personal checks). PIAA physical evaluation forms and school district policy packets must be picked up at the principal's office prior to receiving a physical. Forms can also be downloaded from our school website at indians.k12.pa.us by selecting the high school or middle school and clicking on "Athletic Forms" along the left. All forms must be completed by a parent/guardian in order to receive a physical. Students who do not have a completed PIAA physical evaluation will not be permitted to participate in a fall sport, including practices.
