Southern Columbia's Wilson pitches 3 scoreless innings in relief for win
CATAWISSA R.R. - John Wilson gets hitters out.
That's the long and the short of Southern Columbia's 13-2, five-inning Heartland III victory over Muncy on Monday afternoon.
And the lanky Tigers' sophomore lefthander does it when the chips are down.
He doesn't overpower people. That's not his game.
But he gets people out.
Taking over for starter Matt Klock with nobody out, runners on first and second and his team holding a slim 4-2 lead in the top of the third, Wilson slammed the door.
After the Indians' Anthony Barberio gave himself up with a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third, Wilson sat down Troy Hembury and Jeff Scott with strikeouts to end the threat.
He stayed just as strong the rest of the way, working the final three innings, allowing just one hit and finishing with four strikeouts to earn the victory.
"Isn't he something,?" Southern coach Randy Young asked after the game. "He's just fun.
"He's not overpowering, but he spots his pitches well. He changes speeds, and he has ice in his veins."
The victory was the fourth in five outings for the Tigers this season, and the third for Wilson, without a loss.
It helped that the Southern offense was nothing short of outstanding.
The Tigers chased hard-throwing Muncy starter Dawson Fox just three hitters into the bottom of the third, touching him for six hits and seven runs. They didn't treat Barberio any better when he came in to relieve Fox, scratching out five hits and six runs against him.
The hottest bats in the Southern arsenal belonged to left fielder Tyler Behrent and catcher Taylor Young. Behrent finished with a home run, double and single, knocking in four runs. Young belted two triples and a single, knocking in a pair.
"We put the bat on the ball well today," Young said. "And we did it against some quality pitching."
In all, seven of the Tigers' 13 hits went for extra bases, with Nate Hunter, Kyle Zigarski and Garett Sosnoski also adding doubles to the extra-base barrage.
