LOYALSOCK TOWNSHIP - Losses are always tough to swallow, and can be blamed on any myriad of things.
Playing on turf for the second time in the history of the program, the overall speed of the other team, and just not being as sharp as a team looking to knock off the No. 3 seed needs to be were all true of Southern Columbia in its 3-0 District 4 quarterfinal loss to Loyalsock.
But on the other hand, Loyalsock also did everything it needed to do to move on to the next round to face Lewisburg, a 8-1 winner over Bloomsburg.
The Lancers took 22 shots on goal, controlled midfield and held the Tigers to only three shots as the Loyalsock defense did everything it could to protect freshman goalkeeper Amanda Daneker.
"Like I said to the girls, if you picked a bad day to have a bad game, this was it," Southern Columbia head coach Derek Stine said. "Quite honestly, we're a better team than was out there tonight. I don't know what happened. We had two good days of practice. I thought we were coming into this in very good shape. It happens on the field, that's where it's at. I'm disappointed."
The Tigers cruised to a first-round victory over Wyalusing 8-1, but got very few scoring opportunities as Loyalsock beat Southern to
balls in the midfield and forced Southern's scorers into their own zone to play defense.
Ironically, Stine had thought his team improved most during the season on getting to balls and out-hustling the opposing teams.
"They beat us to the ball. I can't take it away from them," Stine said. "I think actually going to the ball and winning balls was where we improved throughout the year, and we kind of flattened out on that today.
"Partly, playing on turf, the game was a lot faster. We weren't used to the speed. Playing on grass and muddy fields slows things down a lot. The pace of the game was a lot faster, and give them their due, they beat us to the ball."
