SUNBURY - For an all-star meet, some of the wrestlers at the third Annual Northumberland County Recreation Commission All-Star Meet went at it like they meant it Tuesday at Shikellamy High School,

The meet, which raised funds for the recreation commission's Scholar Athlete Scholarship Program and other recreational projects throughout the county, featured eight PIAA state qualifiers, including five medalists and AAA 215-pound state champion Spencer Myers of Selinsgrove, and there were some solid matchups, including a couple featuring Shamokin Area seniors.

Derek Shingara, a three-time state qualifier for the Indians, and Warrior Run's Chris Pfirman, a fourth-place regional finisher, hooked up in a dandy bout with Shingara, who was 32-9 on the season, winning 10-8 in overtime. Pfirman, who was 29-7 this season, had a late takedown in the third period for an 8-7 lead but elected to let Shingara up, setting up a winner-take-all takedown situation in the overtime, which Shingara got.

The meet opened with three real good bouts. Shikellamy's Joe Zoda, who was 25-10 on the season, downed Montoursville's Ben Carey, a fifth-place Class AA state finisher with a 39-7 record and 110 career wins, 3-1 to start the evening.

Another Shik wrestler, Jake Teisher, who was 24-13, followed suit, getting two third-period back points for an 8-6 win over Mifflinburg state qualifier Ethan Midkiff, who was 32-5.

Then Bloomsburg's Garrett Graham used two third-period takedowns and held off a final shot at the buzzer for a 6-5 win over Hughesville's Logan Sherlinski.

In what may have been the night's feature bout, Myers, who was 44-0 this season and will wrestle at the University of Maryland, pinned Montoursville's Nick Dawson, a two-time state AA placewinner who was seventh this season and had a 33-7 record, in 2:59.

Shamokin's Kegan Polastre and Chris Henley each had nice wins as well. Polastre defeated Mifflinburg's Jake Heeter, who beat Polastre in the Southern Sectional final, 6-0, and Henley had a technical fall, 19-3 in 5:56, over Selinsrove's Trent Blair, who was 26-12 on the season.

In another interesting matchup, Shikellamy AAA state qualifier Miles Wolfe took a 6-2 win over Montoursville's Caleb Lomax, a Class AA fifth-place state finisher. Wolfe was 24-14 on the season and Lomax 37-5.
