DANVILLE - In recognition of October's National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Geisinger Health System is teaming up with 17 area high schools to sponsor football "Pink Games" throughout the month.

This is the second year that Geisinger has brought a breast cancer awareness campaign to central Pennsylvania through high school football. Participating schools will receive a "Pink Game" banner for the stadium and pink apparel and accessories for players and cheerleaders to wear during the game. Also featured are "pink" giveaways, including miniature footballs and American Cancer Society breast cancer awareness bookmarks.

"Our local school districts and communities have really gotten behind these games as a way to raise money and honor local cancer survivors," said Victor Vogel, M.D., director of Geisinger Health System's Cancer Institute. "We are pleased to be teaming up with so many schools for this tremendously rewarding and highly visible effort that promotes the importance of breast cancer screenings."

Participating school districts are Bloomsburg, Central Columbia, Danville, Hughesville, Jersey Shore, Lewisburg, Loyalsock, Mifflinburg, Milton, Montoursville, Mount Carmel, Selinsgrove, Shamokin, Shikellamy, Southern Columbia, Warrior Run and Williamsport.

The month-long awareness campaign will culminate on Friday, Oct. 26, with five area Pink Games.

"High school football is such a big draw each Friday night in our local communities and so this program really provides a highly visible platform to showcase the importance of how early breast cancer screening can provide patients better outcomes," Dr. Vogel said. "Our area students and their communities are uniting together to help save lives."
