Only one entry perfect of 222 in football contest
SHAMOKIN - Out of the 222 entries that were received for week seven of The News-Item Football Contest, consisting of games played on Friday, Oct. 11 through Sunday, Oct. 13, only John Starego, 165 Poplar Drive, Kulpmont, correctly picked 14 out of 14 games.
For his perfect paper, Starego earned the first place award and a $50 gift certificate to any of the participating businesses.
There were 11 competitors that picked 13 games correct out of 14, but two of them correctly picked 52 points as the week's highest score. Oregon State reached that tally in their 52-24 win over Washington State Saturday.
A random drawing was held and Don Manley Sr., of 434 Tharp St., Coal Township won second place and a $25 gift certificate, while Lois Buchinski, of 820 W. State St., Coal Township, won third place and a $15 gift certificate.
Those who also picked 13 out of 14 games correct, and are now eligible for the $200 grand prize drawing at the end of the season, along with the three winners are Steve Miller, of 846 W. Spruce St., Coal Township; Gail Rumberger, of 5029 Upper Road, Shamokin; Thad Strike, of 321 Webster St., Ranshaw; Ben Kehler Sr., of 1141 W. Mulberry St., Coal Township; Jim Povish, of 569 Balsam St., Coal Township; David Schuck, of 235 S. Market St., Shamokin; Emily Gunderman, of 219 W. Second St., Mount Carmel; Patrick Kitt, of 803 Scott St., Kulpmont, and Joe McCoy, of 15 N. Chestnut St., Mount Carmel.
