Newport downs Line Mtn.
MANDATA - Newport's Jen Campbell made just one basket Friday against Line Mountain, but it was easily the biggest.
Campbell made a 3-point shot from the right corner, the only 3-pointer the Lady Buffaloes made, to give Newport a 51-47 lead after the Eagles cut a 15-point deficit down to one point in the fourth quarter at Line Mountain.
The Eagles' Madison Lagerman was then whistled for her fifth foul and compounded it by getting a technical, and Darien Holley made all four foul shots, giving Newport an eight-point lead on the way to a 61-48 Tri-Valley Conference win.
Holley went 8-for-8 from the line down the stretch to lead Newport (4-4, 3-3) with 17 points.
Line Mountain (2-6, 1-4) trailed 28-23 midway through the third quarter after Newport opened the period with a 10-3 run but got back into the game by dialing up the fullcourt press a notch.
"We have too many scoring droughts during the course of games," said Line Mountain coach Mike Reed. "That's what happened in that third quarter. We really miss (point guard) Jade London, who has a broken collarbone. Madison Lagerman is playing point but when she's out of the game, we're in trouble.
"We're not used to this (a 2-6 record) but we're seeing more good things. We fought back tonight, which is something we haven't done in other games. That was a big spot for them, hitting that three in the corner."
Line Mountain had trouble defending Newport center Miranda Schaeffer, and particularly when the Buffaloes brought Tessa Campbell off the bench for a bigger lineup. Schaeffer had a nice game with 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists, working the give-and-go to other players well, and she also set a couple of nice screens. Tessa Campbell added six points and four rebounds.
"We couldn't match up with that," Reed said.
Line Mountain also didn't run its offense at first. The Eagles put up about four 3-pointers in the first couple minutes and Reed called his first timeout with the score just 2-0. Madeline Reed eventually found the range and made four 3-pointers on the way to an 18-point game. Colleen Troutman added 10 points and nine rebounds, and Sarah Lahr scored 10 points also.
"This was a game that could have gone either way," Reed said. "We just have to keep working."
