MCA cruises to victory over Shamokin
SHAMOKIN - Neither Mount Carmel nor Shamokin has had a stellar season, but for one night at least, the Red Tornadoes had things plugged in.
Mount Carmel (4-11) won 10 bouts, six by pins, to run away with the Indians (6-15), 57-18, Tuesday night at the Annex,
The Red Tornadoes had two pins in bouts they were trailing, and totally dominated the Indians, who won just one bout, not including forfeits.
"We're still inexperienced, but we're starting to get people healthy and we won some bouts tonight where kids really kept wrestling," Mount Carmel coach Randy Reidler said. "Tom Stief comes to mind. He's finally starting to wrestle the way he did as a sophomore."
Trailing Brett Rebuck 9-8 after two periods, Stief caught Rebuck in a cradle for a pin in 4:34 at 152. That gave Mount Carmel a 29-12 lead and the rout was on.
Brian Beaver (120) got Mount Carmel off to a good start after forfeiting to Shamokin at 113. Beaver trailed Brett Long 5-2 after the first period and 7-2 after Long scored back points in the second, but reversed Long and pinned him in 2:39.
Mount Carmel took a forfeit at the next weight and Shamokin tied the score on Bill Leon's pins of Cody Little at 132. Except for another forfeit, that was the Indians' last stand.
Blake Panko (138) won by technical fall over Theo Deptula, 20-1 in 5:30, Zeke Zsido pinned Josiah Miller at 145, Tyler Wariki pinned Ken Anderson at 160, and Dan Fletcher pinned Mike Ulrich at 170.
Allen Yancoskie took a 16-3 major decision over Anthony Anonia at 182 and Christian Howerter pinned Darris Harrold at 195.
The Red Tornadoes closed the match with decisions by Seth Stablewski (285) and Shane Gudonis (106).
"They finished out," Shamokin coach Todd Hockenbroch. "They won every scramble."
Both teams have meets left before the postseason. Mount Carmel wrestles Hazleton and Benton, and Shamokin has a meet remaining with Selinsgrove.
