COAL TOWNSHIP - All you need to know about Lourdes Regional's 59-30 win over Shamokin Wednesday night was that it wasn't that close.

Not by a long shot. Or a short shot. Or a double shot, for that matter.

The Red Raiders, perhaps embarrassed by their 34-point loss to Tri-Valley on Monday, returned the favor to the Indians in a non-conference game. At one point in the first half, Lourdes (16-5) led 29-4 after scoring 12 unanswered points to start the second quarter.

Shamokin coach Bill Callahan, in the huddle after his team was outscored 17-4 in the first quarter, asked the Indians (11-9) "if they were embarrassed enough."

Apparently they weren't.

Lourdes' defensive quickness and solid ball movement on offense made the game a blowout almost from the start. Lourdes had 17 assists and only five turnovers, and although Shamokin actually ended up with a slight rebounding advantage thanks to lots of second and third-shot opportunities in the second half, at halftime, Lourdes had a 17-8 rebounding edge and had forced 12 turnovers to just three. Oh yeah, on top of that, the Red Raiders shot 16 for 32 in the half, compared to Shamokin's 5 for 19.

"We moved the ball well and we shot the ball well," said Lourdes coach Mike Klembara. "It's all a matter of execution."

As for the Indians, they took on that deer-in-the-headlights look at one point, being outhustled for almost every rebound and loose ball for a period.

Nikki Komara, as she usually does, set the tone for Lourdes. Her defense early in the game led to some easy scores for teammates and though she only scored six points herself, but had nine rebounds, seven assists and five steals.

Rachel Schultz led Lourdes offensive with 16 points, making 8 of 12 shots, adding three assists and five steals, and Sarah Getchey scored 14 points with six rebounds.

"Nikki was in control," Klembara said. "We also had nice games from Caity Funk and Kortni Koshinskie. Caity had a career high (8 points) and Kortni can be deceiving."

Koshinskie came off the bench to score seven points, hitting two threes in the first half, and added three rebounds and three assists.

Olivia Bonshock paced Shamokin with 12 points, and Kelsey Yacko overcame a rough start to finish with eight points, eight rebounds and three assists.
