Locals going to Cooperstown
Several area Little League baseball players will be competing at Cooperstown All-Star Village in Oneonta, N.Y., the week of July 27-Aug. 1, playing for a team called the Schuylkill County Black Diamond Grays.
Cooperstown Baseball Village is a baseball resort which features quality tournaments for players 12 and under. The village, which is located about 20 miles from Cooperstown and the Baseball Hall of Fame, includes lighted junior size fields, batting cages with electronic pitching, an arcade and much more to accommodate 250 teams per season, according to its web site.
Teams are guaranteed two games at the tournament against teams from around the United States and Canada, stay in dormitory housing and receive rings in honor of their particpation.
The Black Diamond team is organized by Dan Quick of Frackville, and recently took second place at a tournament near Allentown.
Team members include John Ayres, Max Tillett and Gaige Garcia of Shamokin, Jack Chapman, Tommy Reisinger, Logan Wills, Blair Wagner and Noah Berkoski of Mount Carmel, Nick Shedleski of Lewisburg, Caleb Southy of Orwigsburg and Anthony Sneavage of Cressona. Another player, on an 11-year-old team, is Damon Dowkus of Mount Carmel.
Quick's Frackville team recently competed in the Nate's Mates Tournament in Mount Carmel, at which he saw many of the players compete.
Quick said he began taking teams to Cooperstown Village in 2010. Players get tips from former Major League players as well, according to Quick.
