Line Mountain coach pleased despite wrestling loss to Lewisburg
LEWISBURG - Line Mountain coach Mike Martz didn't expect the outmanned Eagles to beat Lewisburg Wednesday in the first round of the District 4 AA Duals but he wanted his kids to wrestle well in preparation for the upcoming postseason.
He got all of that. Despite giving up four forfeits, Line Mountain won six of the actual 11 bouts wrestled, including a major upset, in dropping a 45-28 decision to the Green Dragons.
Lewisburg (18-4) advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals at Milton. Line Mountain (9-9) has some time off to prepare for the Southern Sectional.
In another first round match, Benton defeated Southern Columbia, 48-21, at Benton.
"We knew going in we were a little outgunned," Martz said. "But I'm proud of the way our guys wrestled. All of our guys wrestled
hard. I'm proud of this group of kids, considering all the circumstances, this season."
None wrestled harder than freshman Brendan Renn (182). Going against Nick Bernstein, who had a 21-5 record, Renn was taken down at the start but came back with a reversal and back points before the first period was over, then did the same thing off the bottom in the second period on the way to a 14-5 major decision over Bernstein. Renn improved to 13-14 with the win.
"I think Renn's win was the highlight," Martz said. "He showed a lot of leadership. He got popped in the mouth early and came back and that's what leadership's all about."
Cameron Newman also had a good win, with a 2-0 decision over Brian Friery at 113, to improve to 25-6. Friery dropped to 22-3. Newman's second-period reversal was the only scoring.
A string of forfeits put the Eagles behind 30-3 before Blake Carl continued his good recent wrestling, pinning Andrew Fritchman at 138. Seth Lansberry (29-2) followed with a pin of Aaron Van Sickle at 145 to cut the gap to 30-15.
But in a key bout, the Green Dragons' Logan Aikey (21-6) took a 5-3 overtime win over Britton Heim (19-12) at 152 with a reversal in the second overtime period. Maxfield Reed (24-3) followed by putting Riley Shaffer in a cradle for a 38-second pin and a 39-15 lead for Lewisburg.
Erik Smeltz improved to 24-7 with a pin in 5:17 over Storm Brown at 170, followed by Renn's win and an 11-5 decision at 195 by Rayce Boyer over John Ward.
