OMAHA, Neb. - Former Mount Carmel standout Eric Lapotsky got off to a flying start Thursday at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

Wrestling for Oklahoma University, the sixth-seeded Lapotsky registered two falls at 197 pounds to reach today's quarterfinals at the Qwest Center. In the round of 32, Lapotsky (26-6) decked Indiana's Matt Powless in 2 minutes, 19 seconds. In the round of 16, Lapotsky, a senior, gave up the bout's first takedown to Pitt's Matt Wilps, but quickly reversed, locked up a cradle and planted Wilps (33-9) at 2:23.

Lapotsky's quarterfinal opponent will be No. 3 seed Hudson Taylor (40-2) of Maryland, who defeated Lehigh's Joseph Kennedy 9-2 in the round of 16.
