COAL TOWNSHIP - Shamokin is within one win from clinching a District 4 Class AAA playoff berth after a 42-37 Heartland Conference Division I girls basketball win over Jersey Shore Friday.

The Indians (10-7) trailed after the first half 27-18, but came back to tie the game at 31-31 to start the fourth quarter.

Olivia Bonshock led Shamokin with 17 points and scored six in the decisive fourth quarter.

Catelin Pancher added nine points for the Indians.

Shamokin plays at Shikellamy at 1 p.m. in a varsity only game today in its first chance to clinch a playoff spot. The Indians beat the Braves 37-33 in their first meeting this year.

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - The Red Raiders moved into a first-place tie with Williams Valley in the Division II standings with an explosive first half in which they broke out to a 57-21 lead over the Hurriacnes and never looked back.

Lourdes produced four double-digit scorers, led by Michael Menapace's 18 points, including four 3-pointers.

Matt Savitski added 15 points, while Zack Oquendo and Justin Howal netted 14 and 11, respectively.

BETHLEHEM - Seeded 10th in the 10-team District 11-AA Duals field, the Spartans (10-4) nearly pulled the upset. Auston Hummel and Jess Wetzel won by fall for North Schuylkill, which split the bouts 7-7.

At 145, Jordan Shinkus (23-3) got the Spartans off on the right foot with a 7-5 decision over Casey Simmons (15-10).

Tanner Dean (220) and Nate Gadinski (285) also won swing bouts. Dean (16-7) broke out of a slump by pounding Jared Nosal (20-6) by major decision, 13-2. Gadinski (21-4) followed with a 3-0 decision over Jacob Schlinkman (18-10).

Another match that kept the Spartans close came at 182, where senior Danny McSurdy upset junior Tyler Trobetsky 11-9. McSurdy (4-6) got the winning takedown with five seconds left in regulation, ducking behind Trobetsky (19-8), dropping to a leg and tripping him to the mat.
