HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Shamokin defeats Selinsgrove
COAL TOWNSHIP - The first time Shamokin and Selinsgrove met this season, it was a slugfest.
When they met for the second time Tuesday, it was not.
Carley Nash, the Indians' sophomore hurler, scattered five hits and allowed one run in a 3-1 Heartland Conference Division I win over the Seals.
The victory buoyed the Indians' spirits after two straight losses and returned Shamokin's record to within one game of .500 at 5-6.
"It was an important win," Shamokin head coach Christi Cryder said. "We needed that win bad. We never make it easy, but the girls battled."
Nash held the Seals hitless through the first 2 2/3 innings before allowing a walk and two consecutive hits to the top of Selinsgrove's lineup to load the bases.
But Nash worked out of that with a harmless groundout to short.
Jess Kerstetter then homered to start Selinsgrove's fourth inning at bat, but Nash shook it off and retired the next three.
Only five more runners reached base on Nash, three because of errors.
"Carley pitched a great game today and had the defense behind her," Cryder said.
The Indians' defense caught six fly balls that could have been more damaging and catcher Caity Augustitus threw out a Selinsgrove runner at second in the fifth inning.
Nash had the Indians' offense behind her early as well.
Shamokin scored all of its three runs in the first inning.
No. 2 hitter Jenny Hornberger reached on a walk, then scored when Helena Supsic singled to left and the relay went out of the field of play to advance both runners up a base.
Supsic then scored when Olivia Bonshock singled to center, and she scored when Brie Bonshock singled to right.
And then Indians' bats went silent. Shamokin had just two more hits and six more baserunners. The Indians did have the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning but Selinsgrove pitcher Jordan Wilt got two outs and got away unscathed.
"I thought we were coming out strong but the bats didn't show up today," Cryder said.
It was a win that Cryder thinks can be a turning point with Lewisburg, the suspended game with Line Mountain and Columbia Montour Vo Tech next on the schedule before the Indians return to face five mettle-testing opponents at the back end of the season.
