HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Lourdes holds off Nativity
MOUNT CARMEL - Lourdes Regional faced some adversity on Wednesday, and answered it nicely.
After giving up two tying runs on a controversial call in the top of the sixth inning against Nativity, the Red Raiders came right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning, then held off a bases-loaded threat in the seventh for a 6-5 win over the Golden Girls in a Schuylkill League Division II-III crossover game.
"Almost all of our games this season have been decided by 10 or more runs, so it was actually kind of nice to get in a close game to see how we'd respond, and we responded well," said Lourdes coach Scott Long, whose team won its seventh straight game in improving to 9-3 overall, 5-3.
The adversity came when Lourdes shortstop Peyton Klembara appeared to catch a line drive a couple of inches off the ground for the third out in the sixth with two runners on base. But not hearing an out call by either umpire, she threw wildly to first base, allowing runners Rachel Wood and Erin Luckenbill to score, tying the game at 4-4.
The umpires conferred about the call and allowed their initial decision to stand. Nativity had a chance to go ahead when Rachel Souchak and Steph Killian singled, but Lourdes center fielder Emily Long threw out Souchak at the plate to end the inning.
Nativity pitcher Jocelyn Holobetz retired the first two Lourdes
batters in the bottom of the inning but ninth batter Angelique Pennypacker singled to left. Klembara then hit a double to right center and Long then hit a two-run triple to right center.
"Those were great at-bats," Long said. "Angelique's our number nine hitter, and then Peyton and Emily came along and got big hits, too. They won the battle."
The war wasn't over, though. Nativity, with two outs in the top of the seventh, pushed another run across when Erin Luckenbill singled after walks to Cassy Donlin and Megan Parobek. But Allison Warren grounded out to second to end the inning.
"CharLee (Lourdes pitcher CharLee Rosini) hung in there," Long said. "She struggled at times but she gutted it out."
Lourdes scored four runs in the first inning, mixing a double by Emily Long and a triple by Rosini with three walks and a Nativity error. Nativity scored two runs in the third with two singles and a Lourdes error.
Long was 2-for-4 and drove in two runs, and Gabby Long was 2-for-3. Luckenbill and Steph Killian each had two hits for Nativity.
Lourdes has a key game Friday, hosting Minersville.
