KULPMONT - If there was one difference between a 15-win Southern Columbia team and a five-win Mount Carmel team Wednesday, it was this - the Tigers made no errors, and the Red Tornadoes made six.

On a day when both teams were hitting the ball well, the Red Tornadoes gave the Tigers some second chances and, as good teams do, the Tigers made them pay for a 10-5 win.

The teams were tied 4-4 after four innings when Southern put six runs on the board in the fifth inning, with four hits and three Mount Carmel errors in the frame.

Starting and losing pitcher Jake Jones hit leadoff hitter John Wilson, and Nate Hunter then crushed a ball over the left field fence for a two-run home run. After Blake Marks singled, Zach Tocyloski relieved Jones. He struck out Doug Michaels, but Zach Tillett beat out a grounder bobbled by first baseman Anthony Pennypacker. Mason Peters singled, loading the bases, and Garrett Sosnoski singled up the middle driving in two runs. Mount Carmel's center fielder erred on the play, and Sosnoski went to third on a wild pitch and scored on another error.

"You can't give a good team like Southern extra outs," said Mount Carmel coach Ray Bettleyon. "They capitalized on our errors. They hit the ball into holes when they needed runs."

Southern coach Randy Young, who had problems with his team's defense earlier this season, said he is seeing improvement.

"Our defense is starting to come around," Young said. "I'm really pleased with the way we played defense today. We hit the ball well and (reliever) Wilson came in and really toughed it out. They (Mount Carmel) are scrappy, and they battled."

Mount Carmel took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a mammoth two-run home run by Jayson Stellar, who was 3-for-4. Leadoff hitter Michael Pupo had doubled to lead off the inning.

Southern tied the game in the third on consecutive singles by Michaels, Tillett and Mason Peters after Blake Marks reached base on an error.

Southern went ahead 4-2 in the fourth on a two-run double by Peters after Michaels singled and Tillett reached base on an error.

Mount Carmel grabbed the lead again on another two-run homer, this one by Pennypacker in the fourth after a single by Stellar.

But as Young said, the Red Tornadoes battled. Consecutive singles by Michael Pupo, Kyle Karycki and Dan Lesko loaded the bases with nobody out and Stellar, who was 3-for-3, coming to bat. But Wilson struck Stellar out. Colin Bettleyon singled in Pupo but Wilson got Pennypacker to bounce back to the box for a double play to end the game.

Southern (15-5) now awaits the start of the District Four AA playoffs. Mount Carmel (5-13) has a regular season game remaining at South Williamsport on Friday.
