COAL TOWNSHIP - Shamokin Area coach Bill Callahan put it best after the Indians' 54-38 Heartland Conference Division I win over Selinsgrove Friday.

"Every game is districts now," Callahan said, which explains why a win over the Seals, who have one win, was so important.

Shamokin improved to 8-8 overall, 6-2 in the division, needs three more wins to qualify for the district playoffs and is still in the thick of the race for a Heartland playoff spot, and although the Seals dropped to 1-14, 0-8, Callahan wasn't taking them lightly.

"They're going to upset somebody before the season's over," Callahan said. "Tim (Lauver) does a good job and they got the big girl (center Laura Long) back."

Apparently the Indians' players weren't taking them lightly either. Shamokin shot just under 50 percent in the first half, led by the twin inside play of Olivia Bonshock and Gabby Lahr. The Indians took a 17-3

lead in the first period and upped it to 33-16 at halftime.

Bonshock scored 14 of her game-high 20 points in the half, and finished the contest with 16 rebounds as well. Lahr had a solid all-around game, with 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists, three steals and five blocked shots.

"I thought we had a real good first half, especially our ball movement," Callahan said. "I'm really proud of the way we played in the first half. Even in the second half, we had good ball movement but we missed a lot of layups."

Caity Pancher and Shaylee Pesarchick kept the Seals honest on the outside, each scoring eight points.

The Seals cut Shamokin's lead to 12 points midway through the fourth quarter at 47-35 but the Indians got their inside game going for a couple of layups to get the game back under control.

"There are times when we look like a very good basketball team and times we don't," Callahan said.

Samantha Radke and Nikki Krebs each scored seven points to lead Selinsgrove.

Shamokin plays at Shikellamy in a conference game on Friday.
