EMM captures title of Salvation Army basketball tourney
COAL TOWNSHIP - E. Mortgage Management, Lebanon, edged James Pizza, 64-62, to capture the championship of the 10th annual Salvation Army Adult Benefit Basketball Tournament Sunday at Shamokin Area Junior-Senior High School.
The champions came through the three-day, 14-team tournament with an unblemished record, while James Pizza suffered its first loss Saturday and had to work its way back through the losers' bracket for a crack at the unbeatens.
Earlier Sunday, James Pizza nipped Tire Ranch, 51-50, and defeated Klebon's Insurance, 56-45.
Trophies were presented immediately after the title game by Chris Venna and Brian Persing, tourney co-chairmen. Venna and Persing are also members of the Salvation Army Advisory Board. Trophies were presented to EMM, tourney champs; James Pizza, runners-up; Tire Ranch, third place, and Klebon's Insurance, fourth place.
The co-chairmen said a tourney wrap-up will be released later this week. All proceeds benefit the local
Salvation Army's charitable programs.
EMM 64, James Pizza 62
Jim Barron topped EMM offensively with 10 points. Teammates Justin Kress and Ryan Achenbach chipped in with nine each.
For James, Jeff Palmer and Dan Rathmell hit in double figures with 18 and 15, respectively. Nick Griffiths had nine.
Third Place Game
James Pizza 51, Tire Ranch 50
Dan Rathmell hit a three-pointer on the buzzer to give the Pizzamen a one-point victory. Rathmell was high scorer in the game with 18 points. Nick Griffiths added eight and Wes Griffiths had seven. Matt Spears was top scorer for Tire Ranch with 14. Eric Gilroy had eight and Josh Fidler, six.
Fourth Place Game
James Pizza 56, Klebon's Insurance 45
Dan Rathmell topped the victors with 17 tallies. Ty Rathmell and Marc Persing hooped nine each. Joe Britto led all scorers with 23 points for Klebon's. Dean and Brian Schroyer chipped in with seven apiece.
