Elks Hoops shoot today in Mount Carmel

MOUNT CARMEL - Mount Carmel Elks Lodge No. 356 will sponsor the annual Elks "Hoop Shoot," the national free throw shooting contest. It will be held today at the former Mount Carmel Elementary School gymnasium at Fourth and Vine Streets, Mount Carmel. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. and the competition will begin at 10 a.m.

The contest is open to all boys and girls, ages eight through thirteen. There are three age categories in two groups divided by boys and girls: Age 8-9, 10-11, and 12-13. The boy and girl in each age group with the best scores will advance and represent the Mount Carmel Lodge at the district level.

District competition is scheduled for sometime in February at a site yet to be determined.

District winners then advance to the state finals held on March 8 at State College High School.

Winners from State College contest then advance to the regional Hoop Shoot in Wilkes-Barre, March 22 at Coughlin High School. Here they compete against the best free throw shooters from Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey.

From Wilkes-Barre, winners head to Springfield, MA, on April 12 for the National Hoop Shoot finals at Western New England College.
