The Northeast Region and District 4 did itself proud once again in Class AA. Besides Line Mountain's Zain Retherford, Athens' David White (112), Benton's Eric Hess (160) and Lackawanna Trail's Eric Laytos (215) won titles, and Benton's Mike Rhone (119), Coltin Fought (125), Montoursville's Luke Frey (135), Lewisburg's Nathaniel Brown (171) and Towanda's Travis Chesla (189) were runners-up.

Overall, the Northeast had 28 place winners, 25 from District 4 and all three participants from District 2.

In addition, Benton won the team title .

Other regional place winners were, by place: Third: Cody Wheeler, Towanda (112); Mike Testen, Athens (152); Shane Stark, Lake-Lehman (171).

Fourth: Brandon Pesarchick, Shamokin (130); Alex Stanton, Blue Ridge (140); Elias Biddle, Warrior Run (145); Travis DeMott, Benton (285).

Fifth: Colt Cotton, Benton (112); Ben Carey, Montoursville (119); Aaron Fry, Muncy (145); Caleb Lomax, Montoursville (160).

Sixth: Ryan Solomon, Milton (189).

Seventh: David Sheesley, Mifflinburg (103); Alec Eggerton, Loyalsock (140); Garrett Russell, Athens (145); Nick Dawson, Montoursville (215); Wes Tillett, Shamokin (285).

Eighth: Garth Mahosky, Canton (135); Tyler Hain, Warrior Run (152).

Schuylkill League wrestlers who placed included Tri-Valley's Bryn Bowman, eighth (160); and Tamaqua's Garth Lakitsky, fourth (189).

HALL OF FAMER: Shamokin native Bill Welker, the last Shamokin Greyhound state champion (1963), was one of 12 inductees into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame for 2010.

After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh, Welker coached for 10 years at Wheeling (W. Va.) Park High School, coaching three state championship teams. He later officiated for 25 years and has published more than 600 articles on wrestling. He has won numerous awards for his coverage of the sport.

ANTHEM SINGERS: The national anthem was sung by a quartet from Mount Carmel Area High School. Members are Carissa Pupo, Diane Gidaro, Andrea Sentkoski, and Hayley Stepp, and they are under the direction of Mrs. Sharon Styer, MCA choral director.
