District 4 hoops pairings listed
SHAMOKIN - Shamokin Area (20-3) earned the top seed and a bye for the opening round of the District 4 Class AAA boys basketball tournament.
The Indians will await the winner of Friday's quarterfinal matchup between No. 5 Milton and No. 4 Jersey Shore for a semifinal contest next week.
In the other half of the seven-team bracket, No. 7 Shikellamy travels to No. 2 Central Columbia, while No. 3 Danville hosts No. 6 Athens. Both games are slated for Friday at 7 p.m.
In boys Class AA, Mount Carmel Area still has a chance to qualify for the tournament, needing a victory tonight in its final regular season game at Mifflinburg. If the Red Tornadoes win, they'll be the No. 9 seed and play a preliminary round game against No. 8 seed Southern Columbia, Wednesday night at Southern. Should they lose, the miss out on the tournament, while Southern would open play Saturday at 1 p.m. on the road against No. 1 seed East Juniata.
In the other quarterfinal in the top half of the bracket, No. 5 Wellsboro travels to No. 4 Lewisburg, Saturday at 1 p.m.
In the bottom half of the bracket, in a pair of 1 p.m. Saturday games, No. 7 Williamson travels to No. 2 Loyalsock Township and No. 6 South Williamsport will be at No. 3 Towanda.
In the 11-team boys Class A bracket, No. 11 Lourdes Regional opens Tuesday at 7 p.m. at No. 6 Meadowbrook Christian. Other preliminary round games, both Tuesday at 7 p.m., feature No. 9 Cowanesque Valley at No. 8 Muncy and No. 10 Millville at No. 7 Sayre.
In the quarterfinal round, with games set for Friday at 7 p.m., the Muncy/Cowanesque winner travels to No. 1 St. John Neumann, No. 5 North Penn is at No. 4 Mansfield, the Millville/Sayre winner is at No. 2 Galeton and the Lourdes/Meadowbrook winner is at No. 3 Sullivan County.
On the girls' side of the ledger, Mount Carmel Area (19-4) earned the No. 1
seed in Class AA and will host No. 8 South Williamsport, Friday at 7 p.m. Other quarterfinal matchups, all set for Friday at 7, include No. 5 Montoursville at No. 4 Wyalusing, No. 7 Southern Columbia at No. 2 Warrior Run and No. 6 Central Columbia at No. 3 Muncy.
In Class AAA, No. 5 seed Shamokin Area will open play Thursday at 7 on the road against Shikellamy. The winner of that one will meet No. 1 seed Danville, which has a quarterfinal bye, in the semifinals. In the bottom half of the bracket, No. 2 seed Athens has a bye to the semis and awaits the winner of Thursday's 7 p.m. matchup with No. 6 Jersey Shore at No. 3 Mifflinburg.
In Class A, Lourdes Regional is the No. 8 seed in the 8-team bracket and will travel to Millville to meet the No. 1 seed Quakers Saturday at 1 p.m. In the other Class A quarterfinal matchups, No. 5 St. John Neumann will travle to No. 4 Sayre, Saturday at 1 p.m., No. 7 East Juniata will travel to No. 2 Mansfield, Thursday at 7 p.m., and No. 6 Bucktail will go to Northeast Bradford, Saturday at 1 p.m.
