Cold shooting dooms Eagles
MONTOURSVILLE - Success in the playoffs can come down to nothing but a hot-handed shooter.
Canton had one. Line Mountain did not.
And for the Eagles, who had made 94 3-pointers all season and relied on the long ball, making only five 3-pointers and not establishing an inside presence spelled the end of its District 4 Class AA playoff appearance, 52-37 to Canton Tuesday in Montoursville.
"We did not make baskets tonight, period. That was the difference," Line Mountain head coach Craig Reichard said.
"If we would have made some, it would have been a different game."
At times, Line Mountain played neck and neck with the Warriors.
A putback early by Cole Rickert gave the Eagles the game's first bucket, and a 3-pointer by Dillan Michael pushed the Eagles' lead
Line Mountain was able to take advantage of the Warriors' slack passing and forced seven turnovers, but Canton, on the strength of its inside game, went on a 10-2 run to close the first quarter.
The Warriors spread the ball around, with all five starters getting a basket, before everyone went cold to start the second quarter.
That was more than enough of a window for Line Mountain's Joe Weiler to come in off the bench, score five quick points and stake the Eagles to what would be their last lead of the game with 5:21 left in the half.
Canton's Mason Moore provided a similar boost of the bench for the Warriors.
In a two-minute span, Moore hit two 3-pointers and the Warriors went into the locker room with a 22-20 lead.
That's when Canton's Emmett Watson took over.
The Warriors' 1,000-point scorer, scored 10 of his game-high 21 points in the third quarter.
Meanwhile, Line Mountain managed just five points as a team all quarter.
The Eagles, led by Bill Breinich, tried to mount a rally, with Breinich scored six straight points for Line Mountain before he had to leave the game with an injury and didn't return.
It was the first playoff appearance for the Eagles in three years after posting records of 10-12 in 2011 and 5-17 last year.
"This team last year was 5-17 and most of them are back from that team," Reichard said. "They worked hard in the offseason and decided they were going to work hard and won 13 games. That's almost triple the number of wins they had last year."
