Checkered flag drops on regional racing season
Don Kreitz Jr. of Sinking Spring took the lead from Danny Dietrich on the last lap to win the Final Showdown for the sprint cars at Susquehanna Speedway Park, near York, on Saturday evening.
Kreitz earned $6,000 for his second win at Susquehanna this year. It was the final sprint car race of the season in the region.
Harrisburg's Chad Layton led the first two laps before dropping out with mechanical problems. This handed the lead to Brian Montieth and he led until lap 16 when Dietrich drove by in lapped traffic.
Kreitz had started 10th and was slowly passing cars over the second-half of the 30-lap main event. He caught Dietrich in lapped traffic and grabbed the lead with one lap to go.
A red flag stopped the race giving Dietrich a final shot, but it was Kreitz winning the race as Dietrich settled for second. Greg Hodnett, Brent Marks and Sunbury's Mark Smith completed the top five.
Pat Cannon of Etters won the 358 sprint feature for his 12th win of the season in the division. It was Cannon's first win at Susquehanna this season. He took the top spot when leader Ryan Greth jumped the cushion in turn one with a few laps completed.
Josh Beard, Doug Hammaker, Matt Horst and Billy Pauch Jr. completed the top five. Sunbury's Smith was racing in the top five until a late-race incident took him out of contention.
Selinsgrove Speedway honored its track champions two weeks ago with its annual awards banquet. Cannon won his third title in the 358 sprints. Danville's Jeff Rine won his eighth track championship on the strength of seven feature wins.
Bob Bussey of Northumberland won the roadrunner championship and AJ Hoffman of Richfield won the pro stocks. Tyler Snook of Beavertown won the micro sprint car championship. Jessica Miller of Sunbury won 11 features on her way to the 125 cc micro sprint title.
Selinsgrove will open 2013 with 410 sprints cars on Sunday, March 10 at 2 p.m.
Big Diamond Speedway, near Minersville, has been sold to Jake Smulley and his wife, Jasmine. Fritz and Krista Roehrig had owned and promoted the speedway for 40 years. The speedway will continue to feature 358 modifieds, sportsman modifieds and roadrunners on Friday nights. The 358s will run for an area-best $2,750 to win a regular 25-lap feature.
