Brackets drawn for state tournament
The four Shamokin Area and two Line Mountain wrestlers who advanced out of the Northeast Regional to the PIAA Class AA state tournament at the Giant Center in Hershey now know their first-round matchups.
At 103 pounds, Line Mountain's Zain Retherford will wrestle Mt. Union's Ryan Wilson. Shamokin's Brandon Pesarchick will wrestle Schuylkill Valley's Dakota Davis at 130 pounds, while also at 130, Line Mountain's Adam Kritzer will square off against North East's Levi Morton. At 135 pounds, Shamokin's Josh Lahr will open against Saegertown's Tim Clark. At 140, Shamokin's Derek Shingara will wrestle Bermudian Springs' Anthony Davis. Lastly, at 285, Shamokin's Wes Tillett will take on Milton Hershey's Cris Ramirez. Full brackets for both the Class AA and AAA tournaments is on Page B2. Sites, times decided on
Lourdes, the District 4 Class A girls basketball champion, will get a relative home date on Saturday to open its run into the PIAA state playoffs.
Shamokin Area High School will play host to the Raiders game against Nativity, the District 11 runner-up at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
The Shamokin girls' squad, runner-up in District 4 Class AAA, will travel to Parkland High School for a 3 p.m. game on Saturday against District 11 champ Allentown Central Catholic.
Mount Carmel's District 4 Class AA consolation winning girls team will play District 11 champ Tamaqua at 6 p.m. on Friday at Martz Hall in Pottsville.

Giordani qualifies for state meet
Line Mountain's Michelle Giordani, pictured above, has qualified for two events at the PIAA Class AA state swim meet at Bucknell University starting March 19 with times turned in at the District 4 meet in the same pool on Saturday.
Giordani finished second in the district to Jersey Shore's Maddi Thompson in the 200-yard freestyle event, but her time of 1:58.09 was good enough to qualify her as the fifth fastest non-automatic qualifier. Similarly, Giordani's time of 54.06 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle was good enough to qualify. This will be the third appearance at the state meet for the junior.
