Former Mount Carmel Area quarterback Joe Buchinski passed away April 26.

As a Red Tornado, Buchinski established passing records that stood for more than 30 years.

As a senior, in guiding Mount Carmel to an 8-2 record, he passed for 1,963 yards and 27 touchdowns. For his career, he threw for 3,763 yards.

The season total stood as a school record until broken by Dave Shinskie in 2002. The career total was a school mark until broken by Mike Higgins in 1994.

Buchinski's 284-yard, 5-touchdown performance against Shenandoah in 1965 still stands as the school record.

After high school Buchinski received a scholarship to the University of Miami, where he spent the majority of his career as a backup to all-American and future NFL player George Mira. He graduated from Miami in 1970.

Buchinski was a teacher and coach at Miramar High School in Florida for 38 years.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his oldest son, Michael; stepson Zachary Stashis; stepdaughter Anne Lambert; son-in-law Justin Lambert and four grandchildren, Loralai, Logan, Luke and Lily.

He was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Buchinski, and his parents, Joseph and Monica Buchinski.

I understand among Joe's great accomplishments as a football player and coach, he was also one of famed actor, Johnny Depp's teachers at Miramar HS in Florida. On his obit message page, I saw that a friend forwarded an e-mail statement that Depp sent noting Joe's passing and best wishes to his family. Small world. Great guy! He will be missed by many. I am surprised it took two months to report it locally...but glad he was remembered back home!
