Shamokin Kiwanis Club re-elects president, hears from retired editor John Lindermuth, right, a retired News-Item editor, was guest speaker for the recent meeting of the Shamokin Kiwanis Club. Also present was Mark Mishinski, left, lieutenant governor of Division 14 of Kiwanis International Pennsylvania District, who congratulated attorney Myron M. Moskowitz on his as president of the local club for 2009-10. Lindermuth talked about the weekly history column he writes for Sunday News-Item and Republican Herald, and the early history of newspapers in the area and the nation. He provided anecdotes from some of his columns. Though some of the stories he uncovers seem funny to us today, he said more often they reveal how harsh, dangerous and sad the lives of our ancestors were.
