KULPMONT -- PennDOT announced Route 61 through the borough was opened to traffic at 4:10 p.m. Monday.

Route 61 was closed between Eighth and 12th streets for most of the day and traffic was detoured onto local streets because of an early morning fire that damaged four homes Monday.

Several 911 calls were made just before 5 a.m. reporting a fire at 916-918 Chestnut St. near Shimock's Furniture.

When firefighters arrived, both sides of the building were already totally engulfed. The fire quickly spread into 912-914 Chestnut St. The building at 916-918 Chestnut St. collapsed within 20 minutes of firefighters arriving on scene.

According to neighbors, all of the occupants affected by the fire were accounted for.
