Rt. 54 a mess as snow unexpectedly piles up; crash in Coal Twp., too; no school dismissals yet
What was forecast as an insignificant mix of snow and rain for this morning has turned into several inches of snow in the greater Shamokin-Mount Carmel area as of 11:15 a.m. The snow is believed to have caused an accident on West Spruce Street in Coal Township at about 11 a.m. and a number of vehicles are having difficultly navigating mountainous Route 54 between Elysburg and the Route 61 intersection at Strong.
A police officer at the scene near Atlas said he had just traveled across the mountain from Elysburg and said the highway is in poor condition. He said he hadn’t see any PennDOT trucks in informing county communications about the situation.
School officials at Shamokin Area and Mount Carmel Area said as of 11 a.m. no decision has been made about an early dismissal. The National Weather Service said the mix of rain and snow is expected to turn to all rain after 1 p.m., with a high of 43 predicted for later today.
