Rescue work continues; accident victim identified
CONYNGHAM TOWNSHIP – Work was continuing at 10:45 this morning to rescue a man who was trapped in a large construction vehicle at the bottom of a pit on the Blaschak Coal Corp. property, located off Route 61 between Mount Carmel and Centralia.
The man was identified, according to reports at the scene, as Allen Johnson, 60, of Ashland R,D. He was said to be conscious and talking. Johnson was reportedly backing up the large vehicle to turn around when he misjudged his location and went down the pit, which is more than 100 feet deep.
Because of the depth of the pit, the emergency responders planned to bring a crane to the site to aid in the rescue. Life Flight was waiting at the soccer fields east of Mount Carmel.
