Veterans honored by D.C. trip

Font size: [A] [A] [A]

To the editor: It was a great honor for the participating veterans to partake in the bus trip to Washington, D.C., sponsored by King Coal Tours.

During the trip, veterans gathered for breakfast and then visited the World War II, Korea and Vietnam memorials, Franklin Delano Roosevelt memorial, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the White House.

As the Centralia Legion toured the Vietnam Veterans Memorial they gazed at the name of Michael Liptok, who honorably shares the name of the Centralia American Legion Post 608 in Wilburton.

On the way home, everyone stopped for dinner and discussed the beautiful sights they saw. All of the veterans were very impressed with the sights, as well as the preparation of the trip.

On behalf of all veterans, I would like to give special thanks to the Else family, King Coal Tours staff, Mary Ellen Murray, bus driver Dave Pray and News-Item reporter Justin Strawser for an outstanding trip, which was very well-planned and organized. I would also like to give a special thanks to Harry Hause (commander of the VFW in Ashland), who helped organize the trip and is also a driver for King Coal Tours. Harry was not able to take part in the trip as business took him elsewhere.

I would like to say that all veterans and non-veterans who have the opportunity should visit the memorials to honor those who served and gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Sincerely,

Ed Lawler

Commander

Centralia Legion

Post 608

Wilburton
