Olympic training facility exciting for county

Font size: [A] [A] [A]

You won't often hear "Olympics" and "Northumberland County" in the same sentence, but those two words have come together for an exciting project in the southern end of the county.

The wide expanse of Lower Mahanoy Township, a beautiful area not far from where the Mahantango Creek separates Northumberland and Dauphin counties, will be the site of an Olympic training facility for shotgun sports.

The keycard-accessible facility will be unlike anything in all of North America, where shooters - including those from the general public - can access the facility for use at any time.

Certainly, the noise from continuous shotgun blasts can be a concern for neighbors. In this case, however, there are truly few neighbors, and they're already accustomed to the sounds of gun blasts from the same site, as the Olympic complex will be on the grounds of Martz's Game Farm.

Shotgun shooting isn't a daily occurrence for many people, but it is a popular sport, as evidenced by its Olympic status. Like anything else, it's gone high-tech over the years, and that has apparently expanded its popularity. We cite the continued success of the Pennsylvania State Shoot and other major events that are held yearly at the Valley Gun and Country Club in Elysburg. While different, this facility near Dalmatia will likely attract some of the same type of welcomed visitors.

We wish the Martz family and Chubb International good luck on their project. If all goes well, by the fall, Northumberland County can lay claim as home to a state-of-the-art Olympic training facility.
