No excuses: Rremember to vote Tuesday

Whatever excuses we may have, none should stop us from getting to the polls between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday.
The voting process is simple and usually quick, which perhaps is why it doesn't always seem as important as it is.
But a quick look at the world's troubles reminds us of the conditions in countries where democracy doesn't rule, where people don't have a chance to peaceably elect their leaders, both locally and nationally.
Not only do we need to cherish and promote our system of government through voting, we need to carry out this most basic duties of citizenry in respect for those who are fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere across the globe for democratic principals.
And, even though state legislators are not up for election this year, do we need any more motivation to get involved than through knowing how state government has treated its people for the past few years (and longer)?
Instead of statewide and national races of prominence, this election is about local politics - and that makes it even more important.
If you have more than enough reason and ambition to vote, be sure to encourage others to do the same, particularly younger people. They need to be reminded of the importance of this function, and how it's more than just the act of choosing one person over another. It is cliche, but also true: It's their future.
If we don't vote for someone ourselves, someone else will do the voting for us. And if we don't vote, we have no right to complain about those who win the election.
