To the editor: Welcome to a new year, and new political races and promises.

What do we expect or require of potential candidates who will tout lower taxes, smaller government and less spending? Can they answer these three questions?:

- If "lower taxes" is the cry, lower than what, and how much would you be committed?

- If "smaller government" is the shout, smaller than what, and what portion of government does you candidacy stand committed to reduce, and specifically by how much?

- If you promote "less spending," to which of the big three expenditures -Medicare, Social Security and military - do you propose to compromise to lower interest on the national debt?

If we do not demand straight answers from candidates, we will vote again for a government that is a debacle and is currently unacceptable and despised by the electorate.
