Dear Sister Margaret and Mr. Becker: As a recent Lourdes alumna, I wanted to write and express my full support of your actions to take disciplinary action against the students who knowingly went against your warning to not dress in the manner in which they did at the basketball game. The fundamental issue is not what the students wore - the issue is that they were defiant and disobedient when a clear warning was given.

I have been following the story in The News-Item and am completely outraged at the situation. Parents should teach their children responsibility, not support them for their disobedience. That is a huge problem in today's society. I completely agree with your statement that "we teach character and conduct here at Lourdes, and it was lacking."

I am a proud Lourdes alumna, and one of the main reasons I continue to support the school is because the institution helped to mold me into a responsible, successful and respectful person. You do not find that model at many high schools - and I can testify to that as a college admissions counselor who regularly visits high schools across the country.

I am not proud of my alma mater when I see or hear about students acting in the manner in which they did last week. We learned in our religion classes to "honor your father and mother," as the Fourth Commandment states. However, the commandment also means to honor and respect the directions and orders that authority figures give us.

In closing, please know that there are people out there who fully support your actions and will back you up 100 percent. Please feel free to share this e-mail with the faculty, staff and administration.

Sincerely,

Breanna Bradley

OLOL Class of 2004

I completely agree. Lourdes holds high behavioral, academic, and personal expectations for its students-- which is a rare find as far as high schools are concerned. As a current high school teacher, I wish I could say the same of my current school. Though the students may cry now, they will be amply thankful later because Lourdes expected and demanded excellence from them.
