Collection for troops chance to show commitment, pride

To the editor: Friday, Oct. 9, a news story ran by reporter Rachel Carta about the Mount Carmel Area High School (MCAHS) Interact Club's efforts to collect items for servicemen and women deployed overseas.

Guest speakers Staff Sgt Alan Rains and Sgt. 1st Class Troy Ramsey spoke at our club meeting about how our collection could help, not only with providing basic necessities, but also by boosting the morale of the soldiers serving far from home.

While stories come and go and today's news takes precedent over what was happening yesterday, I'd like to personally appeal to the community of Mount Carmel and surrounding townships to not forget our men and women and to help make our effort worthwhile. It is very easy to say a project is worthwhile and to commend those involved, but it takes commitment and effort to step up to the plate and actually make success happen.

Our student service club will get items to the soldiers, but we cannot fulfill this need alone. The drive runs through Saturday, Nov. 7, and a list of items is posted at drop-off boxes and on the MCAHS Interact Web site. We also need addresses of local men and women serving so we can send them a personal message of encouragement and a care package of comfort items.

Drop-off boxes are located at Union National Bank, Community Pharmacy and Boyer's Market, in addition to the MCAHS lobby. Monetary donations, checks only, will be accepted to help defray shipping costs and can be made out to the Mount Carmel Area Interact Club, c/o Mrs. Diane Rumbel, Interact, 600 W. Fifth St., Mount Carmel 17851.

This is one opportunity for Mount Carmel and surrounding townships to come together and show what Tornado pride and commitment is truly about. Thank you for your support.
