Close loophole for physician referrals
To the editor: A letter to our elected representative: I urge you to co-sponsor the Promoting Integrity in Medicare Act (H.R. 2914).
This bill closes the self-referral loophole for ancillary services, preventing physicians from receiving payment for referring patients to facilities in which they have a financial interest. This legislation will reduce inappropriate over-utilization, ensure patient choice for physical therapy services, and help protect limited Medicare resources.
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates this legislation would save at least $1.8 billion dollars. This savings can be used as an offset for repealing the onerous Medicare therapy cap, which is currently keeping Medicare patients from receiving needed physical, occupational and speech therapy care.
