Appreciative of feeling at home in Kulpmont
To the editor: I would like to go back in time to when the Mount Carmel Area School Board no longer needed the school in Kulpmont.
Many rumors were rampant, even to the point that it was going to be torn down.
One day, a small group of people - state Rep. Robert Belfanti, Nick Goretski, Jake Betz and Shirley Little - went to Wilkes University to try to interest them in the school. After many meetings and visits, this did not have a happy ending. Fortunately, this was not the end, because a few people were determined to keep the building functioning. Thanks to Rep, Belfanti and Nick Goretski, in comes the LCCC nursing program for LPNs.
Next we welcome Northumberland County Housing Development, with Ed Christiano as executive director. The building was made into affordable living apartments.
Then to put the icing on the cake, enter LIFE Geisinger, which serves the people of the whole area.
All of this did not happen overnight. It was with the perseverance and determination of people taking their time to ensure what we have here today.
Some may say, "Oh, it's only a building." True, but the memories within those walls are very precious.
Well, that is the end of my story. The facts are true because I was there.
Wishing you are yours a happy and healthy new year.
Shirley Hubler Little
Former president of Kulpmont Borough Council
P.S.: My apartment is part of the old school library. Now I can legally sleep in school.
