To the editor: It is amazing that those who claim to want a Catholic education for their children fail to expect their child to act in a Christ-like manner at all times, in all places, in all situations. Christianity is not something we should turn on and off at our convenience.

The mission of all Catholic schools is to uphold Catholic Christian teachings. If even one person was offended by the "spirit wear" of any student on either side, then Lourdes was obligated to set a good example and remove all signs of disrespect. May I suggest that building character and self-control should be the hallmarks of a Catholic school education, not winning athletic events or a "test of wills."

The truth is, being a teenager isn't easy; trying to guide teenagers on the right path in life is infinitely more difficult. It is a thankless job that all teachers and administrators have. But it is even more challenging for those of us who daily must not only "talk the talk" but "walk the walk" in a faith-based educational setting.

Perhaps it is time for those who do not want to abide by the rules and regulations to try to find a school where they won't be asked to take responsibility for their actions, where there is little accountability, and where they can always find "a way around" to make their point.

It is a shame that the 50th anniversary of a great school is being marred by this needless controversy. How much time and effort is being wasted on making heroes out of those who did nothing heroic?

I am a grateful graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School. I challenge all of our alumni to pray for our alma mater and its students, faculty, staff and administration - past, present, and future - to bring the gospel teachings to life in their lives.
