Mr. Cimino was helpful 'reporter'

We join the greater Mount Carmel area in expressing our condolences to the family of Frank D. Cimino, the champion of veterans who died Oct. 15.
Indeed The News-Item lost a friend, too, with Mr. Cimino's passing.
For more than a decade, he was the "scribe" for virtually every veterans' organization activity in Mount Carmel. He spent countless hours preparing news releases announcing upcoming events or reporting on past activities of which he was a part. His words filled many pages of The News-Item over that time.
Mr. Cimino's submissions were not unlike his personality: nothing fancy, just the facts. In fact, his hand-written accounts (each affectionately referred to in the newsroom as "a Cimino") became a right of passage for new reporters, whose eyebrows always raised when they caught first sight of Frank's penmanship. Like I said, nothing fancy.
We knew his health had perhaps taken a turn for the worse when, just a short time ago, the Mount Carmel veterans news began arriving in neat, type-written form. Suddenly, the personal touch of Mr. Cimino's submissions seemed even more valuable, and missed.
He was always understanding and fair in our dealings with him, and we're happy we were able to feature his life in a "Monday Profile" story a few years back.
In our small way, we share the grief of his family ... no more "Ciminos" to be typed for publication. Rest in Peace, Frank.
Compelling bus ride
Speaking of veterans, we want to thank King Coal Tours for offering us a seat on the bus for Thursday's trip to Washington, D.C. The local bus company took veterans, for free, to see the various war memorials and other tourist sites in the nation's capital.
Staff writer Justin Strawser did a great job reporting on and photographing the event. Using our recently acquired Netbook, he sent photos throughout the day, and we were posting them along with brief stories at newsitem.com while the bus was still in D.C. We had complete coverage, of course, in Friday's edition, and there's more to come Sunday.
The emotional visit made for compelling reading, and we're pleased to have been involved.
