For the people
I see Sen. Portman is now supporting gay marriage because his son is gay. I thought he was supposed to represent the people, not his family.
I was wondering why there is a woman running for mayor in Mount Carmel when she hasn't lived there more than six months and she doesn't really know the town. Kind of ridiculous, in my opinion.
Go with the flow
Mr. Masser, you compare nursing homes to the state controlled liquor stores. You must think because people are middle class they are stupid. The state stores are making millions of dollars and giving a large portion of it back to the people. It is a constant flow, not a one-time shot. Don't forget the decent jobs it will destroy. Those workers spend their money in Pennsylvania. Another plan to make the rich richer and the middle class poorer.
They ought to check the land where they want to build the borough building in Kulpmont. It is only fill that is in there. The water runs through it right into Quaker Run.
I love cats and I have six that are well cared for, spayed and neutered. Two died recently, one was a three-week-old kitten that was left in a storm. Some of them may have been yours that you could not care for. I do not blame anyone, but the no-kill shelters are not only no-kill, they are no-take. They don't take strays. The cats must be healthy and in vet care. So strays are still all over, and I am not talking about feral cats. I am talking about cats that come to my door to get in from the cold. Please, we need to change this.
The new spring
So this is spring? Yay! Behold the snow and sleet piling up outside, feel the deep freeze chill, look at all the disabled snow-bound cars stranded along the road. I long for years passed when April 1 was warming up to wear shorts, tank tops and sandals. By mid-April, I already had a good tan. The seasons are definitely changing. December and January temperatures were well above normal. According to new Gregorian calendar, we can assume the autumn is November, December and January and, God forbid, winter February, March and April.
Say, say, say
Why not have a new feature in the paper that is stupid things that Republicans say and do? Frog's take: Well, we would also need a feature about stupid things Democrats say and do then. The Republicans certainly don't corner the market on that.
How sad for the closing of St. John's church on Arch Street. It is really a landmark and many, many wonderful people and preachers came out of that church. I am so sad to see the closing of this.
Try the Salvation Army Store's candy Easter eggs. They are peanut butter and coconut cream. They are out of this world.
I am sorry to read that another church is closing, but instead of having services in a hall, why not share with another church? My church has services at 7 and 11 a.m. You could gather at 8:30 a.m. I think they should consider that option.
President Obama is my hero. When in time in history will there ever be a guy that is for the small guy. That gets up and bats for the small guy? It will always be the rich and powerful, conquering and telling everybody what to do and making the laws and not caring about the poor, not caring about people without insurance. You go to give the guy credit. He has guts. More guts than any president ever.
It is a proven fact that Iraq and Kuwait Wars were instituted because of their oil. Bush wanted to please Cheney and all their oil lovers and the excuse is having their oil would free us from dependency of the Arab nations.
Keep it up
I want to congratulate the sports department for finally putting something in about the Penn State wrestling. Please keep us abreast.
I would like to know why that one guy from the AOAA committee would ever pick Craig Rhoades to be on the committee and help. I mean he has been in politics for years and look at the mess the city of Shamokin has been in. I thought they weren't going to put any politicians in there?
I reading the reactions to Ashley's story by Sound Off callers I was stunned by the meanness and intolerance. We are all descendants of immigrants. Frog's take: You shouldn't really have been surprised by that.
Even the very conservative Conference of Catholic Bishops find the Ryan budget shreds the safety net for the needy and the middle class.
Head of class
I am a male and I just read Jenna Wasakoski's column on Thursday. It was pretty good advice. She has a good head on her shoulders. Go Jenna. Frog's take: Her head looks even better now that she is a brunette.
Thank you for the article on the gas prices in the area. One area you neglected to post was Elysburg. Elysburg today is $3.79. I was in Hazleton area yesterday and it was $3.55. I don't understand why he gas prices in Elysburg are 24 cents a gallon more expensive than just a short distance away.
I am calling to congratulate the kids at Mount Carmel Area High School for the fantastic performance in the show Grease. What awesome talent by the cast and production crew. The set was incredible, the talent superb. I didn't want it to end. Great job by all. Thank you, kids.
Pass it along
I just got done reading Jenna Wasakoski's article "the best is yet to come" and it was fantastic. I really enjoyed reading this article. I feel it is the best one that she did. I want to got right out and have my thirteen-year-old grandchild read it. Keep up the good work, Jenna.
Tower of power
I didn't realize that Mount Carmel Borough considering to allow Verizon to erect a tower in town park. It will fenced in a 12 by 18 ft. area. The borough would be paid $12,000. My understanding is council wants to do this without prior public knowledge. Please don't let them do this. It would ruin the town park.
Pay it forward
What is going on with this governor of ours wanting to sell everything of to create some fast money. What is going to happen after the money is gone? Just dump everything on the next governor.
Can someone please tell me what a county owned property is? There are two in Mount Carmel and they are falling apart and there is nothing being done about them. I am sure there is more in the area.
The recent fire in Mount Carmel set by the two young boys wouldn't have happened if Mount Carmel would have torn down that building. 301 E. Ave was on fire years ago and it sat there as the biggest eyesore ever. Those poor kids were probably going to do that building a favor. Rip it down already. Frog's take: It is still no excuse for their actions. They put themselves and others at risk for nothing.
