Nutshell

Thank you to Joel Wiest. His letter put the whole matter in a nutshell. DA Rosini and his office are already doing more with less, yet they continue to try and "take out the trash." As an average, ordinary citizen who sees my beloved Northumberland County going downhill due to the ignorance and spite of a small-minded bully, I personally would like to see my taxes pay for more law enforcement at every level. The place to start cutting jobs is in the commissioners office.

Cut him a break

I met the nicest young man yesterday at a local auto parts store. I purchased an item and he asked to install it. When offered a "tip," he refused. "Just wanted to be a help," he said. That same young man is trying to buy a vehicle and is $100 short. No one will cut their price to help him. He has worked in the area over seven years and it would be nice if people earning money would get cut a break once in a while. Workers seem to be treated with less concern and offered less help than those who are milking the system. It is amazing that young people even stay in this area.

Waste of money

About time they eliminated that made up position for the football coach at Shamokin Area School. All that was was a waste of money.

A little too long

Joe Paterno was a very good man but he stayed at Penn State 15 years too long.

Rest in peace

God bless you, JoePa. May you rest in peace. You are Penn State.

Final frontier

Mr. Gingrich, you want to put a space station on the moon. You also want a star ship to go to Mars. This is at a time when there are 15 million people unemployed and looking for work. The economy is bad and they are trying to lower the deficit. Where are your priorities?

How?

How can a person go to court and plead that she is not pushing drugs yet be found guilty by the court? Then a couple days later she is able to post $80,000 cash bail? Where did she get this kind of money if she wasn't pushing drugs?

Good idea

Naming the Career and Arts Center in Shamokin the Frederick "Fritz" Reed Community Center is a very good idea. Fritz served as mayor of Shamokin when Hurricane Agnes came through here and he did all he could as mayor to protect the citizens that lived here. He was a man that tried to help this community and the county. This man's name should be here for the young people to know what he did.

Teach

The school boards want suggestions of how to manage their budget. First off, they should eliminate all the aides and assistants and put the teachers back to teaching like they were hired for. Teach the children how to write, read and do math. Nine-tenths of them can't write their name. They have to print everything.

Living low

About the sump pumps in Den-Mar Gardens. I don't think it is the water discharge from the sump pump flooding your basement. Look around. Could it be that your house is much lower than the houses around you?

Kill switch

Europe and the United States are heading for socialism. Socialism kills incentive, innovation and productivity.

Grand designs

If you watched the memorial for Joe Paterno you saw that his grand experiment of success with honor was never more evident after listening to former players speak of his loyalty, honesty and commitment to the betterment of Penn State University. JoePa, you are Penn State.

At the top

I agree that cutting costs should start at the top at Shamokin Area School District. There are teachers that work 35 to 40 years before they retire. Does anyone realize the pensions these people get? In addition, they fill in as substitutes. Enough is enough.
