Mammogram must

In light of recent newspaper articles and television news stories regarding the need for early screening mammography and breast self-exams, I urge all your women readers to please continue these practices. I am a mammographer by trade, and in my very long career I have seen many women in their 40s, 30s, and even in their 20s diagnosed with breast cancer after self-exams or routine mammograms. I find it amazing that we are on the brink of all being covered under a government-run health-care plan, and now all of a sudden a government study is saying we don't need mammograms in our 30s and 40s.

Pay it forward

Special request: Wouldn't it be grand if the former coal barons, Mr. Kerris and Mr. Helfrick, would donate the remaining $1,300 to cover the balance of the billboard saluting the region's coal mining heritage? And in honor of the coal miners who died or worked in the mines, they could commission a sculpture of a miner. What a tribute this would be. Pass it forward, gentlemen.

Disrespect

Disrespect by children started when the courts took away power to control children in the home and in the schools.

Too early

Who in their right mind goes around collecting garbage at 2:30 in the morning as is done in Mount Carmel, waking people up who have to go to work. They should put a stop to this.

Plenty of thanks

This is referring to the call from the veteran who was disappointed that there was nothing in the Mount Carmel-Shamokin area showing thanks to the veterans on Veterans Day. Monday the ninth, the Mount Carmel elementary school had a beautiful and touching thank-you program for all vets. Wednesday, Mount Carmel high did the same. If you check Thursday the 12th's News-Item, you'll see many listings of thank-you ceremonies in this area. Most nursing homes and churches and veterans organizations were involved. Maybe you should become involved in one of the active organizations.

Poor health care

As a Democratic woman, I will not be voting for a Democrat in 2010 or 2012. A government-sponsored medical task force came out and made recommendations that no mammograms should be given until 50 years old and recommended that women not perform self-exams. The cancer society is in sharp contrast with this task force's recommendations. This is class-containment and rationing at its most basic level. This is not quality health care you can believe in.

Meals for vets

Too bad that Vietnam vet didn't know my husband. Every time we were out and saw a vet in camouflage clothes, he always paid for his meal. He said it was the least he could do for our finest. People, when you buy a poppy, they say thank you; thank them instead.

Layoff alternative

Instead of laying off state workers who work hard for a living, why don't we lay off the legislators who don't do any work and get twice the money?
